Our Honored Dead

Dayton Daily Journal - May 25, 1869

Article:

"Saturday, May 29th, is set apart for services in commemoration of the patriot soldiers who died that the great American Union might live. On that day the graves of our heroic dead throughout the United States are to be strewn with flowers, and glowing eulogies are to be pronounced over their bones. The day revives the memory of toilsome marches, untold sufferings, and the clash and roar of a thousand battlefields. But with the close of the war all the enmities, heart-burnings, and passions have passed away, and a feeling of reverence for the dead has taken their place. These solemn ceremonies in Dayton will command universal attention."
