Andrew J. Coppess was born on a farm in Darke County, Ohio, on January 24, 1863. He spent his early days on the farm, attending the district school. Farming was to his liking and he remained in the business when he grew to manhood. He was elected township trustee, member of the board of education and land appraiser at various times. He also served as notary public for six years. After retiring he moved to Dayton where he was appointed patrolman on March 28, 1904. Mr. Coppess is a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge. He and his wife, Maria, have four children, Clarence, Thurman, Robert and Mabel.
