John Edward Hoffman, a member of the police force since May 22, 1906, is a native of the Gem City. He was born in Dayton on May 27, 1870. From youth he had a desire to sell things, and when he had completed his education in the public schools he naturally entered the commercial field and developed himself into a first-class salesman. When the Spanish-American war broke out he was one of the first to respond to the call for volunteers, and was honorably discharged after twelve months' service. He again went behind the counter and followed this work until appointed patrolman. He is unmarried.
