Benjamin R. Shaman, familiarly known as "Benny," became assistant record clerk in the department April 4, 1910. He is a native of Dayton, having been born in the city June 11, 1891. His early schooling was received in the public schools, and he was a member of the first graduating class of the Stivers High School in 1909. Following his graduation he attended the Jacobs Business College for a short time and later accepted a position as stenographer for George W. Hartzell, lumber merchant. Subsequently he accepted a better position in the purchasing department at the National Cash Register Works, under Mr. Stidd, serving one month, or until receiving his appointment.
