Every member of the Dayton police department knows Captain W. W. Shoemaker, police court bailiff. He has been filling that position satisfactorily since his appointment, on May 23, 1892. In spite of his advanced years he is still young, and it is very seldom that he fails to open and close the police court. W. W. Shoemaker was born in a Pennsylvania village on January 21, 1839, and came to Dayton with his parents when a lad, receiving his education in the public schools of the Gem City. He served four years and four months in the Civil war and made a good record.
